The Fire Never Goes Out -It Adapts to the Season

Autumn scene with a small fire and falling leaves under a waning half moon

Since last week's Full Moon we've been moving through the transition from lunar summer into lunar autumn.

These seasonal shifts are rarely a clean line from one to the next. There is often a moment where the energies overlap. A period where summer has not fully left but autumn has already begun to arrive.

Tomorrow the moon reaches its third quarter phase, the waning moon, which is the turning point where the moon begins to draw us inward. Naturally this phase carries us toward autumn, but I still sense some summer fire energy present, and this is being reflected to me in the stars!

The astro calendar soon places us in Sagittarius which I relate to the Pericardium meridian. Together with its counterpart the Triple Heater or San Jiao, which we will move into in the coming days, this forms part of the Fire element, the energy of summer.

So it feels as though there are still a few remnants of summer here. A few final flames of the fire that we can gather and use before autumn fully settles in, but in a more gentle way. Instead of burning brighter or pushing harder the invitation is to use the remaining fire as fuel to move ourselves cleanly into autumn without burning out.

And this makes perfect sense with the waning moon because the waning phase is always the journey inward. It’s the phase of completion where we close loops, finish things, place things where they belong and give things an ending. Completion is its own form of momentum, and when done consciously an ending can feel just as powerful as a beginning.

So why am I telling you all this?

Well, on the physical level I have noticed something interesting in my own body.

Outside we are still in the solar winter moving toward spring and it has been very cold. My hands in particular have been affected. They are dry, red and my circulation feels slightly blocked. But what really caught my attention was my left ring finger where an unusual bruise appeared. This finger relates through the meridian pathways to the Triple Heater. Soon after, I noticed a similar pattern on my left index finger, the Large Intestine meridian, which relates to the metal element and inner autumn.

So what I sense in my body from this is the fire is present, but the flow of that fire is restricted. It’s like having fuel in the system but there’s a bottleneck. Something wants to move but either it doesn't know where to go, or there’s a block in its path and it just can't get there.

And this is exactly the kind of information the body gives us when we pay attention to the seasons moving through us. Of course our experiences are always going to be unique to us.

But what we all share is that these seasons provide a roadmap. A way to relate to ourselves, understand our patterns and learn the art of adapting to the seasons as they move through our lives.

With that comes deeper understanding, intuitive wisdom, the confidence to trust ourselves and the freedom to make choices that support our health and our life.

And this is exactly what this practice today has opened up for me - an opportunity to reflect and make adjustments that are supportive.

Now I can see it. My natural transition from summer to autumn could not happen smoothly because my seasons were not working together in harmony. I was still relying on a summer push that was no longer really available. The nature of that fire had already changed, but I was waiting for that summer energy to move things forward, instead of calling in the energy of autumn to support the fire through letting go and release.

So instead of pushing outward, which is where I found myself, I chose to use the remaining fire to clear space. I made some simple changes to my day. I adjusted my posture and movement. I went outside into the sunshine. I did what my body needed in order to restore flow. And the change was immediate: the circulation returned to my hands, the warmth came back, the bruising that had appeared on my fingers faded.

This is why paying attention to these seasonal movements matters. When we notice what is happening and respond in small practical ways we help the body restore its own balance. Sometimes it is as simple as movement, warmth, sunlight and allowing the body to guide the next step.

So if we bring this back to the simplest focus for this week here is the invitation.

We are moving deeper into lunar autumn and toward lunar winter. Autumn belongs to the Metal element, to the lungs and large intestine and to the emotional landscape of grief and letting go.

This is the season where the body asks:

What has served its purpose?

What is complete?

What is ready to be released?

This is a good moment to ask yourself:

What have I completed recently?

What can I acknowledge or celebrate?

Where have I moved something forward?

And then gently ask:

Where could I light a small fire, just enough warmth to keep energy moving in the direction I want to go, while also allowing things to wind down so that as I move toward the deeper inwardness of winter I do so clearer, lighter and more complete?

Your body is your Living Mirror, as is the sun, the moon, the stars and the rhythms of nature around you. When you begin to notice these patterns you start to see how life is constantly reflecting something back to you.

Soon I will be opening a space for deeper reflections like this, where we can explore these seasonal movements of the body more closely.

For now you are welcome to step into The Living Mirror group on Facebook. It is a place where you can begin getting curious about your own inner landscape and start making sense of what your body and the moon may be reflecting back to you.

If that way of seeing the body speaks to you, you are very welcome there.
